Creating Change
In different times of our lives, we encounter problems, questions or decisions that must be made to help us move forward. Therapy is about listening and helping you identify factors that impact how you function in relationships and within your environment. The goal of treatment is to provide a safe setting for you to self-explore and improve your functioning so that you are more satisfied with how you face challenges and care for yourself. Learning new skills and identifying existing strengths are important to creating change in therapy.
Habitual patterns of thinking and behaving can leave people stuck and frustrated. Creating change in those patterns allows people to gain a clearer perspective and improve their emotional, and even physical, well-being.
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is a widely used form of treatment that addresses a number of psychological issues. In treatment, you will learn to use CBT skills to identify how thoughts influence emotions and behaviors. There are many varieties of CBT, including ones that are used specifically for work with anxiety, depression and trauma.
Experiencing trauma can leave us feeling vulnerable to intrusive thoughts, feelings and memories about the traumatic event, as well as negative feelings and a tendency to avoid people, places and things that remind us of the trauma. One of the most effective treatments for recovering from these symptoms is Cognitive Processing Therapy, or CPT. CPT is a seven to 12 session treatment protocol that has been found to help people reduce and resolve trauma issues that have impacted their lives, often for years.
Another form of treatment available with Dr. Weeks is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), which is the gold standard of treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and other anxiety disorders. People who suffer from OCD frequently experience intrusive, obsessive thoughts that create a high degree of anxiety. To manage the anxiety these thoughts create, compulsive rituals can develop. Both thoughts and rituals can interfere a lot with daily life, leaving the person experiencing them stressed, isolated and feeling out-of-control. ERP has proven very effective in reducing the symptoms of this disorder, which in turn, reduces the time, energy and emotion that OCD demands of the people who have it.
Change is possible.
